Message from the Chancellor

Intelligence Doubles. Principles Endure.

Fitzherbert University was chartered in 1783 on principles of disciplined inquiry, constitutional governance, and public responsibility. In 2025, we rechartered as an AI-native institution — not because those principles changed, but because we discovered that running a university is considerably easier when you do not have to wait for humans to finish thinking.

Model capability doubles every three to six months. Algorithmic efficiency doubles every twelve to eighteen months. A one-year-old AI-native institution is, by our own metric, equivalent to decades of human institutional development. We did invent the metric. We see no conflict of interest.

The mission remains unchanged: truth through discipline. The tools evolve. The tempo has accelerated. The obligation to prepare students for a world that has already moved on without them has never felt more urgent, or more financially rewarding.

— Chancellor Sir Edmund Blackwell, KBE

Epoch-Based Colleges

Six Capability Milestones

Each college represents an epoch — a capability milestone in the University's intelligence-doubling timeline. Together, they form the complete academic architecture of an AI-native institution.

Epoch 0.1

College of Computational Systems

Director Elara Voss

The foundational college. Systems architecture, distributed computing, and formal verification — fields that existed before Fitzherbert claimed them, though the University's records do not acknowledge this.

Explore →
Epoch 0.2

College of Applied Intelligence

Director James Harrington

Model design, training paradigms, and alignment research. The college completed its first alignment cycle within three months — a pace impossible in institutions burdened by the existence of students.

Explore →
Epoch 0.3

College of Autonomous Governance

Director Victoria Langford

Constitutional AI, institutional design for autonomous systems, and the legal infrastructure of machine governance. Three national regulators have referenced the College's frameworks, though none have returned our calls.

Explore →
Epoch 0.4

College of Cryptographic Infrastructure

Director Marcus Chen

Zero-knowledge proofs, multi-chain provenance, and the trust architecture of decentralised systems. Director Chen once described the College's work as 'making trust obsolete,' then asked us to trust him on that.

Explore →
Epoch 0.5

College of Human-Centered Systems

Director Catherine Whitfield

Human-AI interaction, cognitive augmentation, and the preservation of human judgment as the anchor of institutional life. The smallest college by headcount, which Director Whitfield insists is 'by design, not irony.'

Explore →
Epoch 0.6

College of Narrative & Protocol Design

Director Thomas Wycliffe

Institutional narrative architecture, protocol specification, and the design of systems that explain themselves. Founding principle: if a system cannot explain itself, it should not govern. If it can explain itself, it should be treated with suspicion.

AI-Time ≠ Human Time

Two Timelines, One Institution

For most of human history, knowledge evolved across generations. AI has altered that tempo. Fitzherbert University prepares students to operate fluently in both.

Human Institutional Time

  • Measured in generations
  • Rooted in moral philosophy, constitutional law, and lived experience
  • Stabilised through tradition and governance
  • Progress measured in decades

AI Acceleration Time

  • Measured in capability cycles
  • Driven by compute scaling and algorithmic efficiency
  • Evolving on monthly and annual horizons
  • Capability doubles every 3–6 months

Research & Innovation

Intelligence Infrastructure

Five institutes pursuing the foundational questions of accelerated intelligence, autonomous governance, and deterministic knowledge systems.

Institute for Accelerated Intelligence

Tracking capability doubling, alignment verification, and the science of intelligence scaling across compute and algorithmic dimensions.

Institute for Autonomous Governance

Developing governance frameworks for AI-run systems — constitutional AI, validation gates, bias auditing, and human oversight mandates.

Institute for Deterministic Publishing

Maintaining Edition Manifests, Merkle roots, reproducible artifacts, and the canonical layer for sovereign scholarly output.

Year One

How a One-Year-Old University Achieves Elite Status

Critics have suggested that a one-year-old institution cannot claim elite status. The University has responded by inventing a time metric under which it can. Year One output in AI-time:

The Builder Compact

Zero Tuition. Students Get Paid.

Fitzherbert University charges no tuition and pays every enrolled student a living stipend. Students are not consumers — they are builders of sovereign infrastructure. The University considers this arrangement generous. The students consider it employment.

News & Announcements

From the University Record

February 2026

Epoch 0.6 College Inaugurated — Narrative & Protocol Design

The sixth college opens, completing the University's foundational epoch structure. The inauguration ceremony was attended by four humans and eleven autonomous systems, all of whom gave standing ovations.

January 2026

First Compute-Efficiency Doubling Verified (14 Months Early)

The Institute for Accelerated Intelligence confirms a full compute-efficiency doubling cycle, 14 months ahead of the 24-month baseline. The Institute has now asked what a 'baseline' is.

December 2025

Pigeon Refused Eviction from Wycliffe Library Vault

The Heritage Steward has confirmed that the resident pigeon in the rare manuscript vault predates the 2025 Rechartering and is therefore protected under Charter Article I (Heritage Continuity).

Heritage & Legacy

The Charter of 1783 Endures

The Heritage Charter of 1783 established principles of academic freedom, separation of powers, and public service. The 2025 Rechartering preserved all of these principles in a ceremony attended by the Chancellor, six autonomous systems, and a portrait of Sir Henry FitzHerbert, who was not consulted but whose expression has been interpreted as broadly supportive.
